After the discovery of radiation leak at the junkyard at Ikitelli in Istanbul, the search for the nucleus that contaminated two persons continued. Officials from Cekmece Nuclear Research Center have brought in new equipment that were developed overnight specially for this purpose.
Yesterday afternoon the experts arrived in the area in the company of the Deputy Governor of Istanbul Veli
Aslan and The President of Atomic Energy Institute Cengiz Yalcin, and began searching with the new equipment.
Yalcin said that the equipmen in hand were not adequate for the task because this was the first time such an accident had occured in Turkey. "What we are looking for is a metal stick, 7.5 x 3.5 cm in size. Emitting radiation, the stick in question is not unlike any other metal pieces in the junk yard. Our job is made difficult as the armour was ripped apart and the stick was exposed. We were unable to determine the whereabouts of the material as it emitts high levels of x - rays. Our existing equipments are able to measure x - rays only up to 100. This is why we had to develop overnight a new technology in order to get to the stick. We increased the capacity of our measurement tenfold. This new equipment narrows the area under search and I think now we can get to the material."
