Prosecutor prepared the indictment and requested death penalty for Erol Evcil for murdering his business partner Nesim Malki
The indictment requesting death penalty for Erol Evcil, which was
prepared by Istanbul State Security Court (DGM) Prosecutor Aykut Cengiz
Engin, includes noticing relations in the triangle among business world -
mafia - politics. The indictment underlined the debts of Evcil reaching
almost a half quadrillions of liras, who got hundred millions of dollars
through his dark relations. It said Evcil set up a "threatening force" by
taking police officers to his side. According to the indictment Nesim Malki,
who had the supremacy in thread production market, took refuge behind Erol
Evcil, who became more powerful day after day in Bursa, as Alaattin Cakici
threatened him. This was how Evcil met Cakici. They then competed in certain
auctions together, including Turkbank and Sumerbank. The chain of dark
relations resulted in Malki's murder were reflected in the indictment as
follows:
He set a private "threatening force"
Erol Evcil threatened usurers to clear his debts as he fall into
trouble in repayment. After 1991 and 1992 Evcil gathered people like Sukru
Elverdi, Burhanettin Turkes, Mehmet Sumbul, Muharrem Kutay, Ilhan Ozturk,
Metin Kaplan and Fazil Istan, who are known to be Turkish idealists and to
join armed attacks before 1980 coup and established an affective force in
Bursa. At the mean time he also convinced Assistant to Bursa Security Chief
Yusuf Ilhan to retire and strengthened his force by employing the police
officers, who resigned through the agency of Ilhan as his bodyguards.
Old enemy became a partner
Nesim Malki used to have the freedom to keep the prices of threads
produced as he was the only customer and the seller of the manufactures of
the companies owned by Cavit Caglar and Ali Osman Sonmez. However as Evcil
also entered the market, the prices got out of the control of Malki. In the
end Malki meets Evcil and offers him to be partners, but this partnership
has spread to other areas as well.
First meeting with Cakici
This partnership led Evcil to become indebted to Malki in astronomical
amounts. As he was threatened by Alaattin Cakici and Burhanettin Turkes,
Malki asked help from Evcil. Thus Evcil met Cakici and this led a close
cooperation between the two. Evcil and Cakici competed together in some
important auctions, threatened many businessmen, politicans, banker and
public workers thus got benefits both for themselves and their men.
As the debt to Malki reached to hundreds of trillions, Evcil saw no other
way but murdering Malki. Meeting Sukru Elverdi in September of Evcil ordered
him to kill Malki in 1995. He also wanted him to take the case that Malki
always carries and bring it to him.
Erol Evcil also claimed in his testimony that the trigger Burhanettin Turkes
who murdered Nesim Malki was previously hired by Malki himself to shoot his
lawyer.
