Earthquake shakes Pakistan Afghanistan border region (2)

Islamabad, Oct 26 (DHA) – The earthquake having shaken South Asia has left at least 53 people killed, including 17 people in Afghanistan, 36 people in neighboring Pakistan, officials said. At least 55 people have been injured, according to initial reports.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 shook the Pakistan - Afghanistan border region, which was also felt in Northern India, at 09.09 a.m. (GMT), on Oct. 26.

The quake was 196 km deep and centered 82 km, in southeast of Feyzabad in Afghanistan, said U.S. Geological Survey.

"The October 26, 2015 M 7.5 earthquake near the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan (SW of Jarm) occurred as the result of reverse faulting at intermediate depths, approximately 210 km below the Hindu Kush Range in northeastern Afghanistan. Focal mechanisms indicate rupture occurred on either a near-vertical reverse fault or a shallowly dipping trust fault. At the latitude of the earthquake, the India subcontinent moves northward and collides with Eurasia at a velocity of about 37 mm/yr" has announced the statement released by U.S. Geological Survey.

According to the statement, active faults and their resultant earthquakes in northern Pakistan and adjacent parts of India and Afghanistan were the direct result of the convergence between the India and Eurasia plates.
